Sakib started to play cricket for a local team in Qamarwari his native place in Srinagar, Kashmir. After joining SP College for studies he participated in the inter- college matches where his talent got attention and appreciation which resulted in his selection for S.P College Cricket Club to play competitive cricket at club level. Sakib played for the club for 3 years as a dependable middle order batsman and a handy leg spinner. After college he shifted to Delhi in 2009 and was offered to play for a corporate team but because of a very busy work scheduled he couldn’t play regular cricket. Sakib shifted to Dubai in 2013 and was away from Cricket. He went to the trials and got selected for Dubai Islamic Bank official cricket team. Sakib played for DIB for a few months.Sakib later Joined Dubai Hawks a newly formed Kashmiri Cricket club in UAE , he is one of those guys who is there from the beginning of this team. It was the first ever match of Dubai hawks against the mighty Chinar Cricket Club which was a good team with the likes of Ajaz bakshi and Idris Mir. Sakib stunned everyone by scoring a quick-fire 75 not out in a chase of 170 and helped Dubai Hawks get their first victory in the very first match.
He is considered as one of the most reliable and a calm batsmen and has won many games for Dubai Hawks. Sakib used to bat as a middle order batsmen but when Dubai Hawks faced problem in getting the right opening pair he volunteered to open and he didn’t disappoint. Sakib played for Lalbazar lions in KSL Season 1 and opened the innings for LBL along with Mahfooz Illahi .In all 4 matches of KSL1 the opening partnership was more than a 100 in all games which meant the bowlers had no answer to his batting. After KSL1, Sakib was named the captain of SHR Dubai Hawks due to his performance, calm nature and ability. The beginning didn’t go well because as a captain and as a player as he was under pressure due to lack of availability of players. Entry of some very good players into the team gave him confidence and all that was needed, Sakib showed his captaincy skills in the DAT20 tournament when he made some unexpected changes. In the qualifier match of DAT20 he went on to open the innings himself with Majid leaving behind Star openers like Mahfooz Illahi and Iffi mir to middle order as both were struggling with the new ball and that worked really good for the team Mahfooz ended up with a score of 85 and Iffi mir with 55, hawks won the match and qualified for the finals.
He displayed his skills as a captain once again in the finals of DAT20 when the team was struggling to accelerate the pace while batting first after losing 3 early wickets for 63 in 9 overs he went on to bat and scored some quick 40 runs with 2 sixes and few boundaries in a partnership off 77 in 40 balls with Iffi mir to get the team back on track which was later continued by Umar wali, the team managed to put a total of 199 in 20 overs. It was the batting of United Chinar which was the concern for the captain. Idris Mir for UC had scored 2 back to back centuries with a strike rate of over 200. And the plan worked well for the captain to open the bowling with a spinner. Idris Mir went back to dugout without scoring. But it still wasn’t t easy as the batting of UC was monstrous and capable of chasing any target. He kept on talking to the bowlers and kept everyone in the game. UC was cruising easily till he brought in the spinner again in the 16th over when just 1 wicket had fallen for 140 runs and the spinner was hammered in the first 2 deliveries for runs, he went to the bowler and advised him to bowl round the wicket and outside off stump to Mohsin Matoo and bingo it worked the very next ball Mohsin was caught by the captain itself at the cover. He was so much into the game and finally they won.
He became the first captain of SHR DUBAI HAWKS to have won the tournament.
