India beat Sri Lanka by 34 runs to lift title in U-19 Asia Cup Final

India dished out a clinical performance, beating hosts Sri Lanka by 34 runs, to lift the Asian Cricket Council Under-19s Asia Cup title at the R Premadasa Stadium on Friday.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, India posted a competitive score of 273 for eight in their 50 overs and then rode on its spinners’ fine bowling effort to bowl out Sri Lanka at 239 in 48.4 overs.

The first five batsmen, especially Himanshu Rana (71 of 79 balls) and one-down Shubman Gill (70 of 92), were instrumental in laying the foundation for India’s total, which in the end turned out to be too much for the islanders.

After opener Prithvi Shaw’s (39 of 36) dismissal at the team score of 67, Rana and Gill added 88 runs for the second wicket to take India’s innings forward.

Later, skipper Abhishek Sharma (29 of 44), middle-order batsman Salman Khan (26 of 21) and tail-ender Kamlesh Nagarkoti (23 of 14) played useful hands to help forward India’s score.

For Sri Lanka, pacer Nipun Ransika (3/50) and left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama (3/53) shared six wickets between them.

Chasing 274 runs, Sri Lanka lost opener Vishva Chathuranga (13 of 12) early before Reven Kelly (62 of 101) and Hasitha Boyagoda (37 of 38) stabilised the run chase with a 78-run second wicket stand.

The hosts at one stage were in control of the chase at 196 for four in 37.4 overs, before losing wickets in quick succession to lose their grip on the match. Skipper Kamindu Mendis (53 of 57) completed his half-century in the losing cause.
